Remembering Sam Moore: Blues Singer, of ‘Soul Man’ fame dies aged 89

The music world has bid farewell to one of its legends, Sam Moore, who died at the age of 89. According to what everyone knows, Moore is better nicknamed the “Soul Man” The man had a fantastic voice, charm and genuine love for what he was doing which can be hardly unnoticed when contributing to the formation of the fabric of American music. This man was one half of Sam & Dave who delighted music goers and influenced generations of singers and performers. A Voice Born for Soul
Samuel David Moore was born on October 12, 1934, Miami Florida, and his motivation to embarks into music career was as a result of the musical activities of the church. As in so many other great soul singers, a gospel pedigree was still obvious in his voice. Choir performances during the early years prepared the ground work for such type of music that would later characterize be characterized by raw vocals and energy.

It was obvious that singing came instinctively to Moore and his voice was neither smooth nor rough but was a combination of both; he could sing high notes as well as low. This versatility did it and the talent found its way into music producers’ notice and thus the combination with Dave Prater in 1961. To this they added the Sam & Dave moniker and in that combined format the duo achieved a level of success that would have been hard to come by in any other form.

Although having received some success with record producer Hubert Suzanne and Roulette Records before joining Atlantic Records it is only when Sam & Dave joined Atlantic Records and started recording for Stax Records in Memphis that they started becoming big stars and making topology music. Supported by the in-house band and probably one of the best bands ever, Booker T. & the MG’s, acoustically accompanied by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, the duo produced timeless hits.

Of course, history was made with their unity, ‘Soul Man,’ their most famous song, was an inspiring anthem during the civil rights movement. Singer Charles Moore recorded the song in 1967, and then the verses were capped off by an energetic, “I’m a soul man!” It also charms of the spirit of the times and obstinacy of enterprise that has never been equaled by any business in America.” That clinched them a Grammy Award and is a classic of soul music to this date.

Others like “Hold On I’m comin “, “I thank you,” “when something is wrong with my baby” should have been considered as classics.
